Disc Herniations

A condition of the cervical spine (neck) or lumbar spine, disc herniation occurs when the soft, jelly-like center of a spinal disc pushes through a crack in the outside of the disc. This condition is sometimes called a slipped disc or ruptured disc, and while for some patients it does not cause any ill effects, other people are deeply affected by a herniated disc. Painful symptoms include intense pain, numbness, tingling, sciatica, and muscle weakness.

Many different factors can contribute to disc herniation. It can be caused by age related disc degeneration, in which case it’s called degenerative disc disease, but it can also be the result of improper lifting, trauma from a fall or blow to the back, excess weight, or even a physically demanding job. Sometimes, doctors cannot determine the cause.
The medical professionals at Advantage Healthcare of Charleston accurately assess and diagnose medical concerns in order to devise a treatment plan utilizing holistic healing methods and non-invasive treatments, including Physical Rehabilitation and spinal decompression. Our primary goal is to help patients achieve optimal wellness.
